METAMORPHIC

Metamorphic is a school project entirely made by me, whether it's game design, level design, or even game programming and game art.

You play as a modified blob in the laboratory, your goal will be to succeed in escaping you through your ability, that of transforming you into another form of life.

These transformations, however, are only temporary and only achievable at the transomartion terminals.

GAME DESIGN

The first part of the project was to find the USP of the game, know what transformations the character would be able to use, their specificities, why are they indispensable for the player's evolution etc.
I then created a universe around my character and found a goal for the game, then put it all together in a game overview so as not to get lost in my work.

LEVEL DESIGN

My first intention was to put a lot of inaccessible areas but visible to the player from the beginning.

I didn't want to make a replayable game but a game in the spirit of Mario Bros, where the player will replay the level only to improve his time or collect collectables to finish the game 100%.

The player discovers his abilities as the level progresses, he does not have access to any transformations at the beginning, then unlock them as they go.

I made sure the player went back through areas he had already explored but couldn't access before.

GAME PROGRAMMING

The most important feature to code was the different abilities of the transformations, you can see them on the gifs of the GAME DESIGN section.

Given the complex Level Design of my game, I programmed zones, which opened a camera movement, showed the player where to go.

Another interesting feature was the wide-angle camera at the time of the falling ball, adding a lot of pressure to the player.

The two most complex features to code were the transformer terminal and the escalator (which only works for the blob when it hangs underneath, and for all characters above).

A last interesting feature to code was the visual element when the player uses the pipe, which makes the game smoother and more enjoyable.
