FREI is a fast-paced local arena brawler where 2 to 4 players embody chaotic wizards fighting for survival using orbiting familiars as deadly projectiles.

In compact 2D levels, players move, jump, and charge powerful familiar throws to eliminate rivals. Familiars bounce off walls, reverse on contact with platforms, and return to their owner after each launch. Timing, movement, and map control are key in short explosive rounds where the first to win three takes the match.

A reimagined sequel is in development, featuring new arenas, trap platforms, power-ups, and a hand-crafted clay art style where familiars squash and splatter against walls.

As Lead Level Designer & Game Designer throughout the production, my responsibilities included:
 

  • Game concept and core gameplay loop

  • Design and tuning of the 3Cs

  • Definition and balancing of the main gameplay mechanics

  • In-depth trajectory analysis to shape level layouts

  • Design of specific platforms to encourage different playstyles

  • Calibration of level size and platform density 

  • Supervision and review of level designers' work

  • Documentation and maintenance of design guidelines
